Antique Blue Zircon Pendant

£735.00

Do not adjust your screen! IT’S THAT GOOD! I know right, it doesn’t seem possible! But it is. This old cut zircon pendant is an absolute knockout. Commonly confused with cubic zirconia, which is a man made gem, zircon is a natural gemstone. It is/was mined, not grown in a lab. It was very popular at the turn of the last century, especially in American jewellery, and I have seen several amazing pieces of Tiffany jewellery displaying zircons of all colours (it comes in many colours, with green and blue the most prized).

This is quite a large example of a zircon, priced for its incredible brilliants and high lustre (sparkle and shiny-ness), it displays highly pronounced double refraction that can be easily seen with a loupe (with most stones you can’t see it), which is one of the causes of its insane brilliance and fire.

I love the simplicity and elegance of this pendant, the principal stone is in a gorgeous star setting, on a millegrained knife edge bar which dangles from much smaller zircon accent. It is a beautifully balanced piece, which really allows the zircon to sing. The blue is so intense, and once you know what a good zircon looks like, it’s unmistakeable!

Era

Circa 1910

Material

High carat yellow gold (between 15 and 18ct) and zircon

Measurements

Whole drop without the bale is 27mm, the drop measures 10mm across. I would very roughly estimate the principle stone to weigh approximately 3.8ct (zircon is a heavy stone)

Weight

2.7 grams

Condition

Excellent antique condition
