Epic Victorian Shepherd's Hook with Dog Clip
I kind of struggle to get creative with jewellery; while some are constructing fabulous neck messes, I tend to keep things simple. And then this jewel came along! Good Lord, this is a wonderful piece of gold! She will extend to perfection, either hidden at the back, or make a feature of her. Pop any number of pendants and fobs and let them dangle down from pretty much any chain. OR just wear it as it is, and enjoy that gorgeous sinuous form. The gold looks like 18ct, despite being 9.
Such a generous size for a hook like this, and the baby dog clip is PERFECTION. But what is really special about this, is that it’s original, intact. The market is flooded with ‘extenders’ made from chopped up bits of chain, but this is an OG bit of kit. Turns out the Victorians liked to play with their jewellery too!
The hook is beautifully made, the tip rounded elegantly, with a cut out section where the hook is attached to the clip. It’s not purely functional, it’s also decorative. The perfect little dog clip (a real gem on its own) has flat sides, which I always love. You can hook it, you can clip it, go wild, have fun with it.
Era
Victorian
Material
9ct yellow gold
Hallmarks
Dog clip is stamped 9c (hook tested)
Weight
3.1 grams
Measurements
From top to bottom of whole piece 52.5mm, the hook on its own is 35mm, 1.5mm thick
Condition
Excellent. One tiny mark where the hook has been rubbed for testing, and the bottom of the hook has a few little notches in it, but I think this is decorative, it’s not damage.
