Late Georgian 'Hurry up' Intaglio Fob Pendant
In this divine intaglio a pigeon carries a note between its beak, surmounted by the words ‘DEPECHEZ VOUS’ which translates from French to ‘Hurry Up’. The sender of a note sealed with this seal, is wanting a quick response! How romantic is that???
Not only is the citrine intaglio absolutely gorgeous, but sitting on top of the fob is a coiled snake. The snake represents fertility, healing and re-birth (due to the snake shedding its skin), protection, and when biting its own tail, eternal love. This fob is so full of messages, it is such a special jewel, which has survived 200 odd years in remarkable condition.
The fob has a little split ring attached (can be removed), but it makes a very handy large bale.
Era
Circa 1820
Material
9 carat gold (XRF tested) and citrine
Measurements
12 × 14 × 12.5mm
Weight
3.2 grams
Condition
Very good antique condition. This piece is over 200 years old so it wouldn’t be right if it was in mint condition! There is a tiny split in the base on one side and I can see evidence of the foiling of the citrine, and a small internal fracture/imperfection in the intaglio (definitely inside not on the surface!). The piece is in great condition, but should be treated with care, as with any antique jewel.
