Antique 0.38ct Old Cut Diamond Pendants
I’m sorry, but nothing will ever better the magical twinkle of an old cut diamond. These fat stones were hand cut, about 130 year ago; a diamond cutter sat at his bench and figured out what the hell to do with the rough diamond, and used his EYES and BRAIN to tell him how to fashion into these absolute beauties, and he may well have done it by candle light. The mind boggles.
Characterised by a small high table facet (the flat one on the top) and clearly visible culet (where the bottom point has been cut off, today it is kept on for maximum brilliance, but they didn’t know that then!), true old cut diamonds are a real work of art, and finite. The stones are eye clean and draws a little colour, bursting with brilliance and sparkle.
These two diamonds were the side stones in an antique bar brooch. I converted it because I could keep the character of the original piece, the gold and platinum collets were beautiful and there was no need to mess with them. ‘All’ my very clever jeweller did, was melt the gold from the brooch, and use that gold to make the hanging bales. Sustainable perfection.
Era
The original brooch was circa 1910, but the diamonds are earlier, circa 1880/90
Material
18ct rose gold and platinum, all the metal is from the original piece and the diamonds have not been out of the mount.
Measurements
11mm in its entirety, the diamond is estimated to weigh 0.38ct
Condition
Excellent
