Victorian Niello Chain
This is such a wearable chain, I think it looks amazing on, and it would fit in with all other gold or silver chains, despite it being a fairly niche piece of jewellery. I have always loved niello, the colour contrast is super cool, I love that it’s always rose gold with the silver and black etching. It softens the look, it’s super cool. Niello is almost always a silver base, with certain links heavily plated in rose gold. The characteristic ‘stripes’ and made by etching fine lines into the silver, and filling with a mixture of sulphur, copper, silver and lead, and firing it, leaving a the black patters. Very similar to enamel but much more durable, never a bad thing! Niello was especially popular in France and Russia in the 19th century, but the technique goes as far back as Ancient Egypt!
I love the links on this chain, it’s somehow so contemporary looking. The original and intact dog clip is a great bonus, it’s a very smart chain.
Era
Victorian, circa 1880
Material
Silver, inlaid with niello, and rose gold cased silver
Measurements
17’’ long, 7mm wide
Weight
25 grams
Condition
Terrific. There are three little silver links that have been added on the clasp side, but I think they have been there a long time, as one is stamped 800 with DEPOSE which is a French mark along with the silver purity. There is one small loop added on the end of the other side, the links are discreet.
