Vintage 18ct Gold A. Augis Heart Shaped 'Medaille d'Amour'
These pendants are seriously coveted, and for good reason! I covet them hard, and this one is probably the nicest I’ve seen.
Just in case you aren’t aware, these pendants are made by French jewellers Maison Augis, the first one was made in 1907, and the firm are still making them today, in various sizes and designs. The Medaille d’Amour takes its inspiration from a 19th century poem, which contained the line
“For you see, each day I love you more, Today more than yesterday, and much less than tomorrow.”.
Super romantic right? So the clever sausage that was Alphonse Augis, made this into a kind of rebus, using the plus and minus sign, and the famous medaille was born; + QU’HIER - QUE DEMAIN (more than yesterday, less than tomorrow). Swoon.
This pendant is from around 1970 and no longer in production. Obviously the heart shape is a big bonus (most are round), but it’s a generous size too, most are smaller. I love the textured background, and how it contrasts with the highly polished, faceted border. I have seen these on the market and never gone for one, even though I love them, purely because I think they can be way over priced (and it doesn’t help that my Mum has a very special diamond edged one), but this one fitted just right, and I am very excited to have it as part of my collection.
