Antique Coral Cornicello Pendant
This piece feels so magical. It’s on the large side, which is wonderful, and in totally original condition. What would have been highly polished coral, has softened down beautifully, to provide a super tactile pendant, of the prettiest pinky red colour. You see so many vintage/modern ones in gold which I love, but to find a gorgeous antique one is very special.
The gold pendant mount is simple, and without embellishment, suiting the pendant perfectly keeping the coral safely attached to your chain.
One of the OG protective talismans, the cornicello has always been worn to ward off the ‘evil eye’. But there’s much more to it than that. Believed to date back to Greek and Roman mythology, the obviously phallic shape signifies fertility and virility. The cornicello is deeply ingrained in Neopolitan and Sicilian culture, worn to bring luck and love, and of course protect from ‘malocchio’ (evil eye). They were often made in coral, a porous material, to absorb negative energies, further promoting the ‘protective powers’.
Often carved in coral, I believe this is an unadulterated coral ‘branch’ which forms it’s own natural cornicello or horn shape. While I would never condone the selling and buying of new coral, this piece is well over 100 years old. Whatever you may or not believe about the cornicello, it is an undeniably fascinating object, with a rich history of talismanic properties.
